I read it years ago in college and honestly it just didn't hold much appeal to me. Neither did 'Catcher in the Rye', though, so maybe I'm just a freak.

i loved that book. no offence to karren but you are either very old or very mature. i think that the book really relates to teenagers of muslim backgrounds and to other teenagers. it is a very good read and i can’t wait to read another one of randa’s books. as you can see the book isn’t for people that like complicated stuff and expects life to be far more complicated. it is for people that like to see the world through someone elses eyes and into great depth.

can anyone answer 'what did you least enjoy about the book?' it's really urgent because i'm doing this whole survey thing so if anyone could answer that would be great. thank you.

R J Dent,

Thank you for your post.

In response to your last comment: The reason I wrote the review is because I had committed to writing it for an arts and entertainment site. Believe me, I don't like writing negative reviews but I had to be honest and this review was the result.

Otherwise, like you say, I wouldn't spend the time on a negative review. There are too many brilliant books out there for that.

Kind regards

Karin

I've read Cell and it's almost as though you're reviewing a different novel to the one I read. Anyway - the Cell I read had plenty of scary moments in it - and a few terrifying ones - the mass kill at the stadium; the meeting with the 'head' zombie; the silence the group have to maintain in the house - are all classic King horror scenarios - equal to anything in Romero's films. In a way Cell is like a follow-on from The Stand, or The Tommyknockers - both excellent novels in my view. As for the open-endedness of the novel, well, King's done it before in The Stand, The Mist, Pet Sematary, The Long Walk, etc. In all fairness, it's not King's best novel, that accolade goes to The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, or Gerald's Game, but it is pretty good - and does contain some genuinely scary moments. For an overview of King's novels, check out http://rjdent.wordpress.com/2008/11/02/growing-up-with-stephen-king/ and for Richard Bachman's novels, try: http://www.bookstove.com/Book-Talk/The-Life-Death-and-Afterlife-of-Richard-Bachman.34051
Also, wouldn't it have been better to review a novel you did like - you know, recommend a good novel, rather than slate an okay one?
How about a really good review of To Kill a Mockingbird, for example, or a great review of A Clockwork Orange? Why waste time kicking someone down the ladder when you can use the same energy to push someone more deserving up the ladder?
Anyway - love, light and peace to you.
